The Scouting tradition is strong in Troop 649. Our emphasis is to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. We are especially proud of our continuing designation as a BSA Quality Troop. We have been chartered since 1995, and since then have worked with over 100 registered Scouts. From our inception through this coming scouting year, perhaps as many as 30 of Troop 649 Scouts will have attained the rank of Eagle – a remarkable record of achievement. Troop activity level has been substantial. In the last seven years we have organized over 90 wilderness outings and summer camps, and delivered 4000 collective hours of community service. Our activity level and outdoor program provides the opportunity for scouting achievement -- achievement that provides the Scout a lifetime of memories and lasting value.
How did this all get accomplished? It begins and ends with enthusiastic Scouts. It also makes a big difference to have parents that share a common interest of delivering a quality program. Through instilling an ethic of involvement we have in essence developed a community cooperative that delivers scouting fun and adventure that is frequent, affordable, well supervised, and safe.
Let’s maintain this tradition of success. I ask that you volunteer; join the committee, or become a merit badge counselor, or perhaps organize an outing, or go with us on weekend trips. There are dozens of roles for you to choose from and engage in. It is easy, and we will teach you everything you need to know.
Help us train young people in citizenship, service, and leadership. Through your involvement, instill in young people a lifetime of values, and develop in them the ethical character as expressed in the Scout Oath and Law.

With much sadness and a very heavy heart I want you all to know Bruce passed on Tuesday, December 22nd after a courageous struggle with pancreatic cancer while keeping his sense of humor through it all.
A memorial mass is scheduled to take Saturday, January 2nd at 11:00 am at St. Patricks Catholic Community in
the daily mass chapel located at 10815 North 84th Street in Scottsdale,
AZ (480) 998-3843, www.stpatricksscottsdale.org.
A celebration of his life will take place after the mass at Moon Valley Country Club, his last place of employment, a place he loved to go everyday with people he loved dearly. The club is located at 151 West Moon Valley Drive, Phoenix, AZ (602) 942-0000, www.moonvalleycc.com. Please join us.
Bruce was an integral part of the Troop. If you ever attended a meeting; cooked a meal in camp; attended an Eagle project; or spent a week at Geronimo; you got some 'Bruce Time.' That time was always marked with action. There was always a tent to tie down; a pot to stir; or a piece of gear that needed a field repair, and there you would find him, working away, in CHEERFUL SERVICE.
If you take a silent moment to recite the SCOUT OATH, LAW, and MOTTO, then apply the principles outlined within them to any of Bruces' actions, it would be evident that He lived up to the highest values of Scouting. Over hundreds of conversations, and scores of nights in camp, I never thought to ask him if he was a Scout in his youth. His strength of character, dedication to his family and the Troop, would lead you to believe he was an Eagle Scout.
His presence will be missed, but I'm certain he will keep an eye on us. We will probably be able to stop silently on the trail and hear his voice yelling his favorite word................WYATT !!!!!
